  • When is the right time for my parents to move into a retirement community?

Studies show that seniors who move into a retirement community sooner rather than later are healthier and happier than those who wait on a crisis to occur to begin the transition. According to agingcare.com, “This move helps keep your elderly loved one healthier, safer and perhaps even happier. After an initial adjustment period, many seniors find that they truly appreciate the higher level of support as well as the added opportunities for socialization, dining and activities.” Most seniors admit that they wished they had made the move to a senior living community sooner.

  • When is living at home no longer an option?

    • Sometimes it is hard to tell when you or your aging loved one needs to consider a senior living community. Increased accidents can occur more frequently with seniors, and they have a harder time recovering. It is important to consider increased accidents or trips to the emergency room over the past year.
    • Another contributing factor is someone who doesn’t leave home often for reasons like mobility issues, transportation or health conditions. This lack of independence can cause general malaise and depression due to lack of socialization.
    • Senior living communities are also great for seniors who have a hard time keeping up their homes. Often the maintenance and housework are just too much. Senior living communities like Innisfree Senior Living offer residents options and care plans to help with activities of daily living that can seem overwhelming.

  • How can I help my parents transition to a retirement community?

Making the decision to move a loved one into an independent or assisted living community can be difficult early on. Children want to take care of their parents, but it is often hard to care for them when most people work and have demanding family schedules. It is important to use tact and plan your conversation. As you begin to look, keep your parent(s) involved in the process. They need to understand they aren’t losing independence but gaining independence. Here at Innisfree Senior Living, we offer residents transportation to doctor’s appointments, grocery shopping, banking, nail salon, community outings to parks, casinos, and cultural events. All of this, in addition to a multitude of other activities, is offered to residents.
